Understanding Force

Force represents a push or pull acting on an object. Forces cause objects to accelerate, change direction, or deform. You experience force constantly — gravity pulls you down, chairs push you up, muscles exert force to move your body.

The newton (N) serves as the SI unit for force, named after Isaac Newton. One newton equals the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass at one meter per second squared. Pound-force and kilogram-force remain common in engineering applications.

Force Formulas

Newton's Laws and Force Equations

Newton's Second Law

F = m × a

Force equals mass times acceleration

Example: 10 kg × 2 m/s² = 20 N

Weight (Gravitational Force)

W = m × g

Weight equals mass times gravity (9.807 m/s²)

Example: 70 kg × 9.807 = 686.5 N

Spring Force (Hooke's Law)

F = -k × x

Force equals spring constant times displacement

Example: k=100 N/m, x=0.1m = 10 N

Pressure to Force

F = P × A

Force equals pressure times area

Example: 100 Pa × 2 m² = 200 N

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mass and force?

Mass measures the amount of matter (kilograms, pounds). Force measures a push or pull (newtons, pound-force). Weight is the gravitational force on a mass. A 1 kg mass weighs 9.807 N on Earth but only 1.62 N on the Moon.

Why is kilogram-force still used?

Kilogram-force provides intuitive understanding — 1 kgf feels like holding 1 kg. Engineers in some countries prefer it for equipment ratings. However, newtons remain the official SI unit for scientific work.

How much force can a human exert?

Grip strength averages 300-500 N (67-112 lbf) for adults. Leg press can exceed 2,000 N (450 lbf). Bite force reaches 700-900 N (156-202 lbf). Trained athletes generate much higher forces.

What is a kilonewton?

One kilonewton equals 1,000 newtons. Engineers use kN for large forces — building loads, bridge capacity, crane ratings. One kN equals approximately 102 kgf or 225 lbf.
