Decimal to Fraction Converter – Convert Decimals to Fractions
Converting decimals to fractions is a fundamental math skill. This calculator shows you exactly how the conversion works, step by step. Enter any terminating decimal and get back a simplified fraction plus the mixed number form.
The process is straightforward: count the decimal places, write the number over the appropriate power of 10, then simplify by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor. The calculator walks through each step so you can follow along and learn the method.
How Decimal to Fraction Conversion Works
- 1
Count decimal places
Look at how many digits appear after the decimal point. 0.75 has 2 decimal places. 0.125 has 3 decimal places.
- 2
Write over power of 10
Put the decimal digits (without the point) over 10, 100, 1000, etc. – whichever has the same number of zeros as decimal places.
- 3
Simplify the fraction
Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator. Divide both by the GCD to get the simplest form.
- 4
Convert to mixed number (optional)
If the numerator is larger than the denominator, divide to get a whole number plus a proper fraction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you convert repeating decimals?
This calculator handles terminating decimals (decimals that end). Repeating decimals like 0.333... or 0.142857... require a different method. For example, 0.333... = 1/3 and 0.142857... = 1/7.
Why does 0.333 give 333/1000 instead of 1/3?
Because 0.333 is not the same as 0.333... (repeating). 0.333 is exactly 333/1000. The fraction 1/3 equals 0.333... with the 3 repeating forever. They're very close but not identical.
How do I convert a negative decimal?
Convert the absolute value first, then add the negative sign to the numerator. -0.75 becomes -3/4. The calculator handles this automatically.
What if the fraction doesn't simplify?
Some fractions are already in simplest form. For example, 0.333 = 333/1000, and 333 and 1000 share no common factors other than 1. The fraction stays as 333/1000.
When would I use mixed numbers vs improper fractions?
Mixed numbers (like 2½) are easier to visualize and use in everyday contexts. Improper fractions (like 5/2) are often easier for calculations. Both represent the same value.
