Quick Reference
How it works
Select two timezones to see the exact time difference between them. The calculator shows the current time in both locations and calculates the hour offset.
Unlike simple timezone converters, this tool displays the difference in both directions. If New York is 3 hours behind London, then London is 3 hours ahead of New York.
Example calculation:
Timezone A: America/New_York (EST) Timezone B: Europe/London (GMT) Current time in A: 2:00 PM Current time in B: 7:00 PM Difference: +5 hours (B is ahead)
The tool accounts for daylight saving time automatically. During DST, the difference between EST and GMT becomes 4 hours instead of 5.
When You'd Actually Use This
Scheduling international meetings
Find overlapping work hours between offices. A team in San Francisco needs to know when their London colleagues are online. The time difference tells them 9 AM PST is 5 PM GMT.
Remote work coordination
Digital nomads track time back home. Someone working from Bali needs to know when their New York team starts meetings. The 12-hour difference means midnight in Bali is noon in NYC.
Family calls across borders
Expats figure out when to call home without waking anyone. Calling from Sydney to Mumbai requires knowing the 4.5-hour difference to avoid 3 AM wake-up calls.
Live event planning
Webinar organizers schedule sessions for multiple regions. A 2 PM EST webinar airs at 7 PM in London and 5 AM the next day in Sydney. The difference calculator helps pick optimal times.
Customer support coverage
Support teams plan shift handoffs. A company with agents in Manila and Los Angeles uses the 16-hour difference to provide 24/7 coverage with minimal overlap.
Travel itinerary planning
Travelers calculate jet lag before booking flights. Flying from Chicago to Dubai means an 11-hour time jump. Knowing this helps plan rest days and meeting schedules.
What to Know Before Using
Daylight saving time affects results.Timezones like EST/EDT switch between standard and daylight time. The difference between New York and London is 5 hours in winter, 4 hours in summer. The calculator uses current dates.
Some countries don't observe DST.India, Japan, and most of Africa stay on standard time year-round. Arizona doesn't observe DST (except Navajo Nation). This creates shifting differences with DST-observing regions.
Timezone abbreviations can be ambiguous.CST means Central Standard Time in the US (UTC-6) but China Standard Time (UTC+8). Always use IANA timezone names like America/Chicago or Asia/Shanghai for clarity.
Half-hour and 45-minute offsets exist.India uses UTC+5:30, Nepal uses UTC+5:45, and the Chatham Islands use UTC+12:45. Not all timezones are whole-hour offsets from UTC.
Pro tip: For recurring meetings, check the difference in both summer and winter. DST transitions happen on different dates in different countries, creating temporary mismatches.
Common Questions
Why does the time difference change during the year?
Daylight saving time transitions happen on different dates worldwide. The US switches in March and November, Europe in March and October. Between these dates, the offset temporarily changes.
What's the maximum possible time difference?
The maximum is 26 hours between UTC-12 (Baker Island) and UTC+14 (Line Islands, Kiribati). When it's midnight Friday on Baker Island, it's 2 AM Saturday in the Line Islands.
How do I handle timezones with no DST?
Countries like Japan, India, and China don't observe daylight saving. Their offset from UTC stays constant. The difference with DST countries changes when those countries switch.
Can I use this for historical dates?
This tool shows current time differences. Historical timezone rules have changed - some countries abolished DST, others adopted it. For historical calculations, use a dedicated historical timezone database.
What does UTC mean?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global time standard. It doesn't observe daylight saving. All timezones are expressed as offsets from UTC, like UTC+5:30 for India or UTC-8 for Pacific Standard Time.
Why are some timezone offsets not whole numbers?
Some countries chose offsets that better match their solar time. India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. Nepal is 5 hours 45 minutes ahead. The Chatham Islands are 12 hours 45 minutes ahead.
How accurate is the daylight saving calculation?
The calculator uses the IANA timezone database, which tracks DST rules worldwide. Rules can change with new legislation, but the database is updated regularly to reflect current laws.
