How it works

What to know before using it

Transparency doesn't survive JPG conversion
JPEG doesn't support transparent backgrounds. If you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, the transparent areas become white. Use PNG or WebP if you need to preserve transparency.

Format affects file size
Converting an uncompressed BMP to WebP can reduce file size by 90% with no visible quality loss. But converting JPG to PNG often makes files larger, not smaller.

Some formats support animation
GIF and WebP can be animated; JPG and PNG cannot. Converting an animated GIF to PNG will only save the first frame as a static image.

Browser compatibility varies
AVIF and WebP offer better compression than JPEG, but older browsers (especially Internet Explorer) don't support them. For maximum compatibility, stick with JPG and PNG.
