Understanding Volumetric Weight

  • Formula (cm): (L × W × H) / 5000
  • Formula (inches): (L × W × H) / 139
  • Billable weight: Greater of actual or volumetric
  • Lower divisor: Higher volumetric weight (more expensive)

Tip: Use the smallest box possible and remove excess air from bags to minimize volumetric weight charges. Carriers use this to charge for lightweight but bulky packages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is volumetric weight in shipping?

Volumetric (dimensional) weight is a pricing technique that calculates package weight based on size rather than actual weight. It ensures carriers charge appropriately for lightweight but bulky packages that take up valuable cargo space.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

For cm: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 5000. For inches: (L × W × H) ÷ 139. Example: A 40×30×20cm box = 24,000 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg volumetric weight.

Do I pay for actual or volumetric weight?

Carriers charge the greater of actual or volumetric weight. Dense packages (actual > volumetric) are charged by actual weight. Bulgy packages (volumetric > actual) are charged by dimensional weight.

How can I reduce dimensional weight charges?

Use smaller boxes, remove empty space, compress items in vacuum bags, choose flat-pack options, and avoid oversized packaging. Even reducing one dimension by 5cm can significantly lower charges.

Why do carriers use dimensional weight?

Aircraft and trucks have limited cargo space. A truck full of pillows weighs little but occupies all space. Dimensional weight ensures fair pricing that reflects the true cost of transporting bulky items.
