Understanding Cargo Volume & Chargeable Weight

Freight carriers charge based on the greater of actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight. This ensures fair pricing for both heavy dense items and lightweight bulky items.

  • Air Freight: 1 CBM = 167 kg (1:6000 ratio)
  • Sea Freight (LCL): 1 CBM = 1000 kg (1:1000 ratio)
  • Road Freight: 1 CBM = 333 kg (1:3000 ratio)

CBM (Cubic Meter): The standard unit for measuring cargo volume. Calculate as: (Length × Width × Height) / 1,000,000 for dimensions in centimeters.

Always compare your cargo volume against standard container sizes to optimize shipping costs and ensure proper container selection.

Cargo Volume & Shipping FAQs

How do I calculate CBM for shipping?

CBM = Length × Width × Height (in meters). For cm: divide the result by 1,000,000. Multiply by quantity for total volume.

What is chargeable weight in freight?

Chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight. Carriers use this to ensure fair pricing for both heavy and bulky items.

How many CBM in a 20ft container?

A 20ft standard container has approximately 33.2 CBM internal volume. A 40ft container has about 67.7 CBM, and 40ft HC has 76.4 CBM.

Why is air freight more expensive per CBM?

Air freight uses a 1:6000 ratio (167 kg/CBM) vs sea freight's 1:1000. This reflects the premium for speed and limited aircraft cargo space.

How do I optimize container loading?

Use our Container Load Calculator to maximize space utilization. Stack efficiently, distribute weight evenly, and consider pallet configurations.
