Future value tells you what your money will be worth at some point in the future, assuming a specific rate of return. It's one of the most important concepts in finance because it helps you understand how investments grow over time through compound interest.

Compound interest means you earn interest not just on your original investment, but also on the interest that accumulates. This creates a snowball effect – your money grows faster and faster as time goes on. The more frequently interest compounds, the more you earn.

The Future Value Formula

FV = PV × (1 + r/n)^(nt)

FV = Future Value (what your investment will be worth)

PV = Present Value (your initial investment)

r = Annual interest rate (as a decimal, so 7% = 0.07)

n = Number of compounding periods per year

t = Time in years

The effective annual rate (EAR) shows the true annual return when compounding is taken into account. It's always higher than the nominal rate when compounding occurs more than once per year.
