Understanding Percentages
What percentages mean and how to use them

Percent means "per hundred." When you say 25%, you mean 25 out of every 100, or 25/100, or 0.25. Percentages let you compare parts to wholes on a standard scale, regardless of the actual numbers involved.

The basic percentage formula is: Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100. Rearrange it for different needs: Part = (Percentage / 100) × Whole, or Whole = Part / (Percentage / 100).

Three Common Percentage Calculations

Find X% of Y: (X / 100) × Y

X is what % of Y: (X / Y) × 100

Percentage change: ((New - Old) / Old) × 100

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage?

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 25 out of 50: (25 / 50) × 100 = 50%. To find a percentage of a number, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply: 20% of 80 = 0.20 × 80 = 16.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the original from the new value, divide by the original, multiply by 100. Price went from $50 to $60: ((60 - 50) / 50) × 100 = 20% increase. If it went from $60 to $50: ((50 - 60) / 60) × 100 = -16.67% (decrease).

What's the difference between percentage points and percent?

Percentage points measure absolute differences. If interest rates go from 5% to 7%, that's a 2 percentage point increase, but a 40% increase ((7-5)/5 × 100). Confusing these leads to errors – always specify which you mean.

Can a percentage be more than 100%?

Yes. 100% means "the whole thing." 200% means twice as much. If you had 50 sales last month and 150 this month, that's 300% of last month's sales (or a 200% increase). Percentages over 100% are common in growth comparisons.

How do I add a percentage to a number?

Multiply by (1 + percentage as decimal). Adding 15% to 200: 200 × 1.15 = 230. For tax: $100 + 8% tax = $100 × 1.08 = $108. To subtract: multiply by (1 - percentage). 20% off $100: $100 × 0.80 = $80.
